DOT 3, DOT 4 — and Why We Use the One Your Vehicle Was Built For
If you've ever looked at your brake fluid reservoir cap, you've probably seen DOT 3 or DOT 4 stamped into it. Those aren't brand names or grades of quality — they're minimum performance standards, and the number that matters most is the boiling point.
Remember that moisture we just talked about? The reason it's a problem is heat. Braking turns motion into heat, and that heat travels into the fluid. Water boils long before brake fluid does, so the more moisture a system has absorbed, the lower the temperature at which it can start to vapourize. That's why every DOT rating lists two numbers: a dry boiling point for fresh fluid, and a much lower wet boiling point for fluid that has absorbed moisture over the years.

Those are the minimums each spec has to meet — a quality DOT 4 will usually beat them. The pattern is what matters: DOT 4 tolerates more heat than DOT 3 before it starts to boil, and it holds up better once it has taken on some moisture.
So Why Not Just Put DOT 4 in Everything?
It's a fair question, and it's the one we get most. DOT 3 and DOT 4 are both glycol-based and technically mix, so it's tempting to treat the higher number as a free upgrade. But brake fluid isn't only about boiling point — viscosity matters too, and that's where it gets specific.
Most vehicles built in the last fifteen years or so run ABS, traction control, and stability control. Those systems pulse the brakes through a valve body with very fine internal passages, and they're calibrated around fluid that flows a particular way — especially when it's cold. That's why a lot of manufacturers now call for something more specific than "DOT 4," like DOT 4 LV (low viscosity) or their own factory spec. Putting in a fluid that's merely compatible isn't the same as putting in the one the system was designed around.
One thing to be careful about: DOT 5 is not DOT 5.1. Despite the name, DOT 5 is silicone-based and must never be mixed with DOT 3, 4, or 5.1. It's rare on modern road cars, but the naming trips people up.

So we don't guess, and we don't stock one fluid and use it on everything. We look up what your vehicle's manufacturer specifies and we use that — whether it's DOT 3, DOT 4, or a low-viscosity DOT 4.
It's not a dramatic part of the job. It's just the part that has to be right.
What Happens in the Background
There's another side to it that often doesn't get talked about.
