We've had this conversation more times than we can count. A customer replaced two worn tires at a tire store, the new ones went on the rear, and the explanation was some version of "new tires have to go on the back — it's our policy." Months later the vehicle comes in for service, we measure the tires, see the fronts wearing faster and recommend a rotation. That's when the confusion starts: "The tire shop said the better tires have to stay on the back."
So who's right? And if the best tires must always stay on the rear, why have we been rotating tires front to back for decades?
Why the Tire Industry Says New Tires Go on the Rear
There is legitimate engineering behind the recommendation. The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association and major manufacturers including Michelin all say that when only two tires are replaced, the new pair goes on the rear axle. The reason is vehicle stability in wet conditions.
A tire with deeper tread evacuates water better. As tread depth drops, the tire becomes more susceptible to hydroplaning. Picture a vehicle with 10/32" on the front and 2/32" on the rear hitting standing water at highway speed: the rear tires may start hydroplaning while the fronts are still gripping. When the rear loses lateral traction before the front, the vehicle begins to rotate. That's oversteer — instead of pushing straight ahead, the back end starts coming around, and it can become a spin surprisingly quickly.
We agree with the industry here. Putting nearly worn-out 2/32" or 3/32" tires on the rear while installing brand-new tires on the front creates a significant traction imbalance, and we wouldn't recommend doing it.
What If the Existing Tires Aren't Worn Out?
Change the example. You have two perfectly serviceable tires measuring 6/32" and the two new tires measure 10/32". The blanket rule still says 6/32" on the front, 10/32" on the rear — regardless of which axle wears faster, which tires do the steering, or which axle handles most of the braking.
Think about what the front tires are being asked to do. They steer. Under braking, weight transfers forward, so they're responsible for a substantial portion of your stopping ability. On a front-wheel-drive vehicle they also have to accelerate the car. Steer, brake, accelerate — it's no surprise the fronts on many vehicles wear faster than the rears.
So with two healthy 6/32" tires and two new 10/32" tires, there's a reasonable argument for putting the new pair on the front: the deepest tread goes on the axle doing most of the work, and the tread depths start moving closer together instead of farther apart.
The Rotation Problem Nobody Talks About
Follow the "new tires always go on the rear" rule and you start at 6/32" front, 10/32" rear. The fronts wear faster, so some time later you're at 4/32" front, 9/32" rear. The gap between the axles has grown.
Should we rotate them? If the best tires must always stay on the rear, the answer is no. Eventually the fronts wear out, another pair gets bought, the 9/32" rears move to the front, the new tires go on the back, and the cycle starts again. Tire Rack acknowledges this in its own technical information: once a significant tread-depth difference exists and the deeper tires stay permanently on the rear, normal front-to-rear rotation can become impossible.
That's strange, given that rotation exists specifically to keep all four tires wearing at a similar rate.
Now flip it. Put the new tires on the front — 10/32" front, 6/32" rear. Because the fronts work harder, you may end up at 8/32" front, 6/32" rear. The difference is down to 2/32", normal rotation can resume, and you're working back toward four matched tires. To us, that makes practical sense.
"Oversteer Scares Passengers. Understeer Scares Drivers."
There's some truth buried in that old joke. When a vehicle oversteers, the rear steps sideways — the driver can see and feel it rotating and often steers into the skid instinctively. That doesn't make oversteer harmless. A major rear-traction loss happens fast, and an inexperienced driver can easily overcorrect into a spin, which is exactly why the rear-axle recommendation exists.
But understeer has its own problem. When the wheel is turned and the vehicle doesn't turn enough, the reaction we see again and again is to turn farther, then brake harder — asking more cornering force and more braking force from front tires that have already reached their limit. The car keeps pushing toward the outside of the corner. So while engineers consider understeer the more stable condition, calling it "easier to control" doesn't always match what we've watched real drivers do.
Where We Draw the Line
There is absolutely a point where the traction difference is too great. We're not putting a pair of 2/32" tires on the rear of a vehicle with brand-new tires on the front — at that depth the old tires are near the end of their useful life anyway.
For us, around 5/32" is where this conversation changes. That's our practical shop judgement, not an official tire-industry tread-depth standard. With two healthy, evenly worn tires at roughly 5/32" or more and two new tires going on a typical vehicle, we think there's a reasonable case for putting the new pair on the front and letting normal wear bring the depths closer together. Below roughly 5/32", we're much less comfortable moving that pair to the rear, and putting the new tires on the back — or replacing all four — starts making much more sense.
There are exceptions. AWD systems may have strict limits on tire circumference or tread-depth difference. Some vehicles use staggered sizes that can't be rotated front to rear at all. Tire type, age, condition, alignment wear and manufacturer requirements all matter. That's why we inspect the vehicle instead of applying one sentence to every car that comes through the door.
What We Really Want: Four Similar Tires
The front-versus-rear argument misses the ideal outcome, which is all four tires with similar traction. That's why rotation matters: rotate regularly, check alignment and measure tread at every service, and big front-to-rear differences shouldn't develop in the first place. When all four reach replacement together, there's no debate about where the new ones go.
And if conditions are severe enough that a healthy 6/32" tire is struggling with standing water at highway speed, should the safety plan rest on another few thirty-seconds of tread — or on slowing down? Tread depth gives you a margin. It doesn't make deep standing water safe.

We understand why the industry recommends two new tires on the rear, and in some situations we completely agree with it. What we don't accept is "it's policy" as an explanation. A healthy 6/32" tire is not a nearly worn-out 2/32" tire, and those two situations shouldn't get the same answer.
